What is Pilates-based rehabilitation?

A lot of people have correctable problems but don't know it or don't know that they can do something about it.

Sometimes referred to a post-rehabilitation, Pilates-based rehabilitation is a way to learn about your body, correct faulty movement patterns that may or may not cause pain and reduce the likelihood of future injury. The basic goal is to restore functional efficiency within the body through muscle testing, manual therapy, Pilates-based corrective exercises, stretches and release work.

The details of the musculoskeletal system are vast and complicated, but the Pilates instructors at Agile Monkey focus on teaching their clients basic solutions to appease and prevent pain within their own bodies. The goal is to give their clients enough information so that they can start to see the patterns and help themselves.  Once recovered, they can continue with the work to gain strength, flexibility, agility and confidence, progressing to a level of health and fitness that will enable them to prevent future injury.

Please note that while the instructors at Agile Monkey have had great success with rehab clients, anyone suffering from an acute injury should always seek medical advice from a licensed medical provider (doctor, physical therapist, etc).

Agile Monkey instructors have worked with neurologists, osteopaths, physical therapists, acupuncturists and many other health care providers. We welcome the opportunity to learn from their experience and enjoy collaborating with other health professionals to ensure that we are all working toward the same goals.

Client Testimonials

For the last fifteen years, I've suffered from chronic back pain. Through the years I tried physical and water therapy, acupuncture, massage, painkillers, and Motrin that I took on a daily basis. All of these things provided temporarily relief, but nothing long term. After doing Pilates with Lisa Graham and Amy Bruckmeier, the back pain that I had been dealing with for almost 15 years went away! Not only did they create an effective home program for me and make sure I understood it, but also worked with me on posture, with an emphasis on how I sit at my computer. Since I write at my desk for hours each day, this postural work has made a huge improvement in my comfort level. After taking painkillers and Motrin for 15 years, it has now been over three months since I've had to take any pain medication at all! A million thanks, Lisa and Amy! You rock!”

I am 78 years old and started doing Pilates a year ago because of lower back pain due to an earlier diagnosed degenerative lumbar spine condition. Physical therapy sessions offered limited relief but since working with Amy, my back pain has all but disappeared - some days I wonder if I'm really 78! My posture is certainly better and I seem to breathe more deeply and move more easily than I did before Pilates.”
–Kenneth (age 78)

As both a client and a fellow practitioner (acupuncture orthopedics), I have appreciated and benefited from Lisa's thorough, competent and devoted approach. She has guided my attention towards aspects of my posture that I had been neglecting, and helped me see new ways of addressing chronic low back and leg pain. Her exercise instruction is patient, precise, safe, and supportive. Her enthusiasm is catching and helps to keep me motivated to make more changes. I highly recommend her to anyone wishing to address chronic pain or structural imbalances through massage and exercise therapy.”
